Art Historian, Lecturer and Artist specializes in Arabic-Islamic Art, Art History, and Culture.

  • Dr. Hashim Al-Tawil is a Professor and chair of Art History program at Henry Ford Community College, Dearborn, Michigan

  • Lecturer of Islamic art & Architecture and Arab Studies at the University of Michigan-Dearborn

  • Assistant Director of the "Pluralism Project" at the University of Michigan- Dearborn, an affiliate of the parent program at Harvard University.

  • Lecturer at the Detroit Institute of Art; Rotterdam Museum in the Netherlands; University Museum, Provo, UT; Brigham Young University, Utah, and other academic institutions.

  • Cultural consultant to many academic and community organizations

  • Member of the Board Directors of the Asian & Islamic Art Forum at the Detroit Institute of Arts since 2006.

  • Former Member of the Multicultural Multiracial Committee, Farmington/Farmington Hills, Michigan.

  • Recipient of International awards and recognition. He recently received the Fulbright Senior Research Award for 2006-2007 in Italy. The research will examine the Arabic calligraphy on the ceiling of the Palatine Chapel in Palermo and other related buildings in Sicily during the Norman reign.

  • Many of his artworks have been purchased by and displayed at the Copenhagen Museum of Graphic Arts; The Iraqi Museum of Modern Art; Jedda Museum, Saudi Arabia; Royal Collection, Amman, Jordan; Baghdad International Airport, the Iraqi Fashion House, the University of Michigan-Dearborn, and many private collections in the Middle East, Europe, and the United States. 

1999-2007
Conducted fieldwork and research in religious centers in metropolitan Detroit for the Pluralism Project. Fieldwork and research at Petra, Jordan to study certain Nabataean sites. Project at the National Museum, Damascus, Syria as a special consultant in Islamic art with a team from Brigham Young University. Fieldwork in Jordan, studied Early Christian Churches and early Islamic (Ummayad) art and architecture in different sites: Qusayr `Amra, Qasr Harrana, Umayyad Palace and Mosque, and at Amman National museum. Field work on Islamic antiquities and monuments at Berlin museum, Germany. Field work on Byzantine and Ottoman sites, monuments, and museums in Istanbul, Turkey.

· Developing and coordinating a manual on the “Cultural History of the Arab-Americans in Metropolitan Detroit “ to be published by the cultural program of the Arab American & Chaldean Council (ACC).

· Developing a collection of relics, scriptures, prayer books, artifact, icons, and different religious materials as part of the Pluralism Project activity. The collection will eventually be housed at the Mardigian library, UM-D campus.
